TikTok, one of the most popular social media platforms, faces a nationwide ban in the U.S. due to data privacy concerns and national security risks. This ban prevents new downloads and updates from app stores, but existing users can still access the app with some workarounds.
As the TikTok ban is coming on January 19th, and as of writing, the deadline has not been extended, this guide will help you keep using the TikTok until the ban is lifter.
Using a VPN to Access TikTok
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a tool that masks your location by routing your internet traffic through servers in countries where TikTok is still accessible.
Using a VPN you can bypass the TikTok ban and access the content. Keep in mind, that accessing TikTok from your smartphone will require a VPN with a mobile app.
Choose a Reliable VPN Provider
Choose a trusted services like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Surfshark for better security and performance. Personally, I use NordVPN as it comes for free with my Revolut Metal subscription, if you already have one, check your perks on how to access it.
Free VPNs are also a solution, but may either sell your data or come with the danger of malwares. Paid VPNs are usually the best solution.
Install the VPN App
Download and install the VPN app from its official website or app store.
VPNs will have an app both desktops or smartphones. Most major VPNs also cover both Android & Apple devices.
Connect to a Server
Open the VPN app and connect to a server in a country where TikTok is not banned (e.g., Canada or the UK).
Tip: What content you are served on TikTok might change based on the country you visit from. Choosing a location in Canada might be the best option.
Access TikTok:
Once connected, open TikTok as usual.
Keep the VPN running on the background while using TikTok on a browser or through the app. Remember to close the VPN when you exit the app.
Tips for Using a VPN Safely:
- Ensure your VPN has a “kill switch” feature to prevent accidental exposure of your real IP address if the connection drops.
- Regularly clear your TikTok cache for smoother operation while using a VPN511.
Downloading the TikTok APK for Android
If TikTok is no longer available in app stores, Android users can bypass this by downloading its APK (Android Package Kit) file from third-party sources.
Follow these Steps to Download and Install the TikTok APK
Find a Trusted Source & Download the APK
Use reputable websites like APKMirror or APKPure to download the TikTok APK. Be sure to download the latest version you can find.
Be sure to also check TikTok’s download page for up-to-date links. They might offer the APK on their website after the ban (although I doubt they will do it for legal reasons).
Avoid unknown sources to reduce risks of malware or compromised files.
Download the APK to your phone.
Enable Installation from Unknown Sources
You will need to allow your phone to install the app. If you haven’t installed an APK before, downloading from a 3rd party source and not the Android Store is risky.
Many hackers may use the opportunity of the ban to share APKs with viruses or other harmful programs.
To enable the installation, go to your device’s:
- Settings
- Security/Privacy
- Enable “Install apps from unknown sources.
Install the APK
Locate the downloaded file in your device’s file manager. Tap on it and follow on-screen prompts to install TikTok.
Open and Use TikTok
Launch TikTok and log in as usual.
You will have access to your account and use TikTok while you have open a VPN and use another country to access it.
Problems with APKs
No Automatic Updates: Since app stores block updates, you’ll need to manually download new versions of the APK whenever updates are released. You will want to update your app regularly, as this is both about security and new features.
Security Risks: Always scan downloaded files with antivirus software before installation. APKs may come with malware, viruses, or any other malicious software/files attached.
Will TikTok Get Banned?
It’s still uncertain if TikTok will be banned, and there will be many changes in the following days. Chances are, the ban will only last a few days.
But, if you want to keep accessing the app while it is temporarily banned in U.S., follow this step by step guide, and enjoy your favourite social network undisturbed!
